Overview of Merton

The London Borough of Merton is located North of Gatwick airport a distance of 25 miles that would take around 40 minutes by taxi via the M23. It is a borough in southwest London and has a population of 200,500 according to 2011 statistics.

It was created in 1965 with the merging of Municipal Borough of Mitcham, Wimbledon and Morden Urban District. The main commercial centres are Mitcham, Morden and Wimbledon, of which Wimbledon is the largest, and the smaller centres include Raynes Park, Colliers Wood, South Wimbledon, Wimbledon Park and Pollards Hill. The internationally recognised Wimbledon Tennis Tournament is held in the borough at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and is the largest sporting event in England. There are some interesting attractions and heritage sites within its boundaries including Merton Priory-a scheduled ancient monument, Nelson Arms, Gatehouse, Wandle Park and Southside House-that has connections with Queen Anne Boleyn, the Duke of Wharton, Frederick, Prince of Wales, Marie Antoinette, Admiral Lord Nelson, Lady Hamilton and others.

There are many parks, open spaces and nature reserves some of these include Nelsons Gardens, Ravensbury Park, Wimbledon Park, Lynmouth Gardens, Bennetts Hole, Cherry Wood and Cranmer Green. There are a number of walks and trails that encompass some of the best local attractions such as the Nelson Trail, Beverley Brook Walk and Capital Ring Walks.
