The borough was created in 1965 with the merging of the the Municipal Borough of Mitcham, the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon and the Merton and Morden Urban district, all formerly part of Surrey. It has 5 town centres Colliers Wood, Mitcham, Morden, Raynes Park and Wimbledon. The area was greatly damaged during World War Two which took many years of recovery, gradually with redevelopment and a boost of prosperity to the area and now has the third highest average annual income in London and is an attractive place to live for families and commuters. There are 67 parks and open spaces, 11 nature reserves, some of the most popular public areas include Wimbledon and Mitcham Commons.

Merton is home to the World famous Wimbledon Open Tennis Championships that has nearly half a million spectators attending the games and the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club which was founded in 1868. There are many attractions in and around the borough including Merton Abbey Mills, Deen City Farm, the Wandle Trail, the Nelson Trail and The New Wimbledon Theatre and Studio Theatre.
