Overview of Milton Keynes
Milton Keynes is situated 25 miles north from Luton airport, this journey normally takes about half an hour. Milton Keynes is situated 45 miles north west of the capital in Buckinghanshire. At the last count the population stood at 184,506. Although under an English partnership directed scheme this is expected to rise to over 300,000 by 2030. It was given town status in 1967 and covers an area for land 89kn square.
Milton Keynes was purposely built as a commuter overspill to London in the 1960's. The Government became aware of bad victorian housing on the outskirts of the capital that was badly delapidated. The desision was therefore, taken to bulid Milton Keynes as a town for the future. It was built to be eqidistant to Leister, Birmingham, Oxford and Cambridge, so that it would one day have its own status as a commercial center. many top architects worked on this project and design is very much a feature of Milton Keynes.
The planner's built lots of green spaces into Milton keynes and in 2006 there were 20 million trees in the area. There is a 125 mile cycleway around the town called the Red Way systerm, and there are numerous parks and nature reserves around the edges, including the Blue Lagoon Nature reserve and Willen Lakeside Park
Milton Keynes was purpose built to be a commercial center and as so it has excellent communications links with the capital and the rest of the UK. It has many shops and conference centers as well.
Interestingly, the site was used as a location for the Vietnam war film "Full Metal Jacket," when the town was being constructed.
