Overview of Newhaven
The town of Newhaven is located South of Gatwick airport a distance of 37 miles that would take around 46 minutes by taxi via the A23 and A27. It is situated in the Lewes district of East Sussex and has a population of 12,026 according to 2007 Statistics.
The history of the town can be traced back to the Bronze Age where the settlers built a fort on Castle Hill. In 480 AD the Saxons established the village of Meeching. In 1882 the harbour was officially recognised as the 'Port of Newhaven' and The Newhaven Lifeboat is one of the oldest in Britain. Newhaven Fort was built on Castle Hill in 1859 and was built to defend the harbour and was the largest defence work ever to be built in Sussex.
Places of Interest in Newhaven include Newhaven Fort which is open as a Museum, South Downs National Park, Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club. Nearby towns are Seaford, Brighton, Lewes and Alfriston.
