Overview of Nottingham

Nottingham is a city in South Nottinghamshire and is 14 miles of East Midlands airport. This journey should take about 25 minutes by taxi in normal traffic conditions. From East Midlands airport a direct route to Nottingham would be the A453 through Willford. Nottingham is 17 miles North of Loughborough, 15.6 miles West of Derby, 17.5 miles south of Sutton-In-Ashfield and 20 miles Southwest of Newark.

The City of Nottingham has a population of 288,700 residents according to the 2007 Mid Year Estimates. The town has many fantastic attractions, some of which include Museums and Exhibitions. The Historic buildings such as Nottingham Castle and Newstead Abbey are popular attractions along with the underground City caves. These anglosaxon tunnels offer a unique insight into the past and in how the caves have been used in recent times. The city is well known for the lovable outlaw Robin Hood with Sherwood forest not too far away from the city in the surrounding county.

There are market towns and designer boutiques for shoppers and many cafes and restaurants. The city has a wide range of sporting facilities to choose from whether it is a day at the races at Nottingham Racecourse, watching Nottingham Forest Football club or White water rafting at the National Water sports centre. Nottingham Tennis centre is one of the largest of its kind in the country and features prestigious tournaments that are open to the public.

FM Arena Nottingham provides live music, comedy, Shows and sport events while the Royal Concert Hall Nottingham provides classical music entertainment. Famous Ice Skaters Torvill and Dean were born in Nottingham and many tourists enjoy practising their skating at the National Ice Centre, Situated in the city s fashionable Lace Market. The area has that name due to the remarkable heritage of Lace making that took place in Nottingham in the 19th century.

The University of Nottingham and its three campuses are all located very near to the city centre and offer a wide range of courses in vocational and academic subjects. Famous people that went to the university include Twentieth Century Novelist DH Lawrence and more recently the founder of JD Wetherspoons pubs Tim Martin.
