Overview of Oxford
Oxford is situated 49 miles North-West of London Heathrow Airport. The journey takes about 1 hour by car in normal traffic conditions and it can be accessed from Heathrow via the M25 followed by the M40. Oxford is close to London, lying 60 miles to the West of the Capital.
At the last population count Oxford had 151,000 residents, with very diverse backgrounds. 27% of the poulation are ethic minorities and this lends a cosmopolitan flavour to the City center. Oxford is boarded by two rivers, the Cherwell and the Thames, these meet to the south of the city. Around Oxfordshire the Thames is also known as, The Isis.
Oxford is home to Oxford University. The oldest University in the English speaking world. The poet Matthew Arnold described Oxford as, the "City of gleaming spires," this is after the architectural stylings of the University buildings.
In 1840 the great Western Railway and the london north Western Railway, linked Oxford with the capital. In the 1920's Oxford established itself as a center for publishing and printing, and this is reflected today in the vast number of book shops.
On may 6, 1954, Roger bannister, an ex student of Oxford university, was the first person to run a mile in under 4 minutes. This event took place at the Iffey road track.
one last local site of interest is th Headington Shark. This 25ft fibreglass shark can be found pertruding from the roof of 2 New High st, headington, Oxford. It was erected in 1986 by sculptor John Buckley, on the 41st anniversary of the first atomic bomb being dropped on Nagasaki. It is a statement about war, nuclaer energy and the sculptors sense of despiration.
