Overview of Petersfield

The town of Petersfield is located West of Gatwick airport a distance of 59 miles that would take around 1 hour 8 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A3. It is situated in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire within the South Downs National Park and has a population of 13,303 according to the 2001 Census.

The history of the town is as ancient as the Bronze and Iron Ages as 21 burial mounds were found on the Petersfield Heath which provided the site with Scheduled Ancient Monument status. The town was founded in the 12th Century by William Fitz Robert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester. The town was situated on frequently travelled routes and this helped it to prosper. There were weekly markets trading in Horses, Cattle and Sheep and manufacturing of leather and cloth.

The town is a nice place to shop with a selection of independant and commercial shops aswell as a market that is held twice a week. The town is built around two squares, The Square and The Spain and many notable buildings still remain such as St Peters Church which the town is named after and dates back to the Norman Times. Places of interest include, the Physic Garden, Petersfield Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Country Park and The Serpent Trail a 65 mile walk through the Heath and Downland of Hampshire and West Sussex to Haslemere.
