Overview of Plymouth

The city of Plymouth is located South West of Gatwick airport a distance of 222 miles that would take around 4 hours by taxi via the M25, M5 and A38. Plymouth is built between two rivers the river Plym to the east and the river Tamar to the west. Since 1967 the unitary authority of Plymouth has included the suburbs of Plymton and Plymstock.

Plymouths history dates back as far as the Bronze Age. The first settlement was found at mount Batten. This settlement grew as a trading post for the Roman Empire until the more thriving village of Sutton surpassed it. During the industrial revolution Plymouth developed as a shipping port handling imports from different countries and passengers from America. Plymouth also constructed ships for the Royal Navy. This gave the opposition the incentive to target Plymouths dockyards during World War 2 and led to its partial destruction. This destruction was known as the "Plymouth Blitz" it left 3,700 houses destroyed and 1000 people lost their lives. After World War 2 Plymouths city centre was re-built.

According to the census taken in 2001 Plymouth had a population of 250,700 residents thus making it the 15th most populated city in England. It also holds the 11th largest university complex in the United Kingdom due to the large number of students that attend. Plymouth has the largest operational naval base in Western Europe known as HMNB Davenport. From Plymouth you can travel by ferry to France and Spain and its airport operates many international flights.
