An overview of Preston

Preston is a city in the non-metropolitan district of Lancashire situated in the North-West of England.Heathrow airport is situated 218 miles south east of Preston and can be accessed via two motorways the M6 and the M40. This journey will take about 3 hours and 45 minutes in normal traffic conditions.

Preston is sited on the North bank of the River Ribble, which boarders the city. Many visitors come to enjoy walks along the canal, and strolls by the marina and docklands. The Marina is just north of the River Ribble which enters into the east of the Irish Sea. This marina has its own chandlery and coffee shop.

Preston has a population of 131,900 residents according to the census taken in 2001. It was granted city status in 2002 becoming England s 50th city. It is also home to the University of Central Lancashire. The University is one of the largest in the country with a student population of over 30,000 students. Preston is commonly known for its active night life with many night clubs including, Storm, Squires, and Warehouse.

Preston's most renowned landmark is St Walburge's Church, designed by Joseph Hansom of Hansom Cab fame. It has a spire standing 94 metres in height. This is the tallest spire on any church in England.

Preston is also home to many museums the most well known being the National Football Museum. This was opened in 2001 at Preston s Deepdale Stadium. The museum holds the world s largest collection of football artifacts and memorabilia. Another key place to visit in Preston is Winckley Square where there are many beautiful Georgian buildings.

Preston Railway Station is a major stop on the West Coast Main Line. With regular long distance train services to London Euston station and the South East, and Glasgow and Edinburgh to the North. Preston is also a hub for connecting rail services in the North West, with direct services to many different destinations.
