Overview of Rainham

The town of Rainham is located East of Gatwick airport a distance of 47 miles that would take around 1 hour by taxi via the M25, M26 and M20. Rainham is a suburban town in northeast London, England, and part of the London Borough of Havering.

Rainham is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Raineham and is thought to mean 'homestead or village of a man called Regna', formed from an Old English name and 'hām', meaning settlement. For much of its history Rainham was an agricultural settlement, using the River Thames for trade. In the 16th century industry was limited to a boat-builder and tannery. Awharf was built in th 1720's which led to increased trade with London. A second wharf was constructed in 1872 and from 1869 there was a growth in industrial development, including chemical and fertiliser factories. At the same time a community developed around a pub on the river and operated as a resort for day-trippers. As the Thames industrialised it declined in popularity and was gone by 1945. Rainham developed into a suburb of London after World War I.

In 2000 the RSPB managed to acquire a site on the medieval Rainham Marshes right next to the River Thames (which was once military firing range). Since then the RSPB has set about transforming it into an important place for nature and a great place for people to visit. Now you can expect to see breeding wading birds in spring and summer, and large flocks of wild ducks in winter. Birds of prey and rare birds are regularly seen too. Other places of interest in Rainham include Rainham Hall, a beautifully intact merchant s house dating from the early 18th century and Spring Farm Park, which host events and activities for the physically active.
