The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is located Southwest of Stansted airport a distance of 51 miles that would take around 1 hour 20 minutes by taxi via the M11. It is located in southwest London and forms part of Outer London having a population of 187,500 according to 2011 statistics.
The borough was created in 1965 with the merging of the boroughs of Barnes and Richmond and consists of some historic villages including Castelnau, Kew, Barnes, Mortlake, East Sheen, Richmond, Whitton, Twickenham, Petersham, Ham, Hanworth (in part), Teddington, Hampton Hill, Hampton, and Hampton Wick. The River Thames flows through the centre of the borough for 21 miles linking Hampton Court Palace, Teddington Lock, Richmond town centre and Kew Gardens with central London. The area has many attractions on offer for visitors with places such as Kew Gardens, Richmond Park and Twickenham Stadium within its boundaries.
With nearly two-fifths of the borough's area as public open space there are plenty of places to enjoy walking or cycling particularly the riverside towpath from Kew to Richmond. The town centres have a wide choice of shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants with the area around Richmond having a weekly Farmers Market, aswell as some independent boutiques and stores near Richmond Green. Some of the most notable parks include Richmond and Bushy parks (both former royal hunting grounds), Barnes Common, Sheen Common, Ham Common, Marble Hill Park, and Old Deer Park.
