Overview of Romford

The town of Romford is located North East of Gatwick airport a distance of 48 miles that would take around 55 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A12. It is situated in the London Borough of Havering in northeast London and has a population of 36,500 according to 2005 Statistics.

The towns name is derived from Romfort, from the old english 'rum' and 'ford' and means 'the wide or spacious ford'. It developed in the Middle Ages on the main road to London and was successful in agriculture and industries such as cloth making, weaving, charcoal burning, metal working and brewing. Due to its location on the main road to London it became a coaching town in the 18th Century and the local railway station was opened in 1839 which helped to boost the towns economy.

There are many facilities and attractions in Romford such as Romford Greyhound Stadium, Cineman, Ice Arena and the Liberty Shopping Centre. Some interesting towns situted nearby including Hornchurch, Dagenham, Ilford and Brentford, and it is only 15 miles from central London by train.
