Overview of Rotherham
Rotherham is a town in South Yorkshire and is 46 miles from Leeds Bradford Airport, the journey normally takes about an hour in normal traffic conditions. Rotherham has a population of 248175 according to the 2001 census. Situated near the River Don and the River Rother it is between Sheffield and Doncaster. The town was founded in the middle ages and went on to become an industrial town for Coal, Iron and Steel. It is Only 6 miles from Sheffield city centre with its other neighbouring towns being Barnsley and Doncaster.
Famous people that have come from the town are Paul Shane, William Hague and David Seaman. Museums to visit are Clifton Park museum, The York and Lancaster Regimental Museum and Magna a science and adventure centre an excellent day out. There are many places to go for long nature walks on the outskirts of the town where there can be found woodlands and pretty villages to explore. There are self guided trails that you can take around the town, and parks such as Boston Park, Ulley Country Park within the South Yorkshire Forest and Rother Valley Country Park. Historic places to see could be the famously haunted Haworth Hall, Clifton Hall and Roche Abbey in Maltby aswell as the Medieval Minster Church of All Saints which is a fine example of architecture and Conisborough Castle that overlooks the River Don.For shopping Crystal Peaks has high street stores, restaurants, Cafes and large food superstores. The Centenery indoor and outdoor markets which are a big feature of the town with the indoor market open 6 days a week. The weekly Effingham street market has over 30 stalls to choose from and there is a monthly farmers market. Rotherham Leisure centre is a popular facility that has an indoor climbing tower, sports hall, leisure pools and gym suite.
