Overview of Rugby

The town of Rugby is located North West of Gatwick airport a distance of 122 miles that would take around 2 hours 8 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M1. It is situated in Warwickshire on the River Avon and has a population of 61,988 according to the 2001 Census.

The towns history can be traced back to the Iron Age and a Roman settlement existed outside of the modern town called Tripontium. At the end of the 19th Century it grew into a major industrial centre due to the engineering works being set up there. Rugby is the home town of the invention of Rugby which is credited to William Webb Ellis whose statue can be seen standing outside the famous Rugby School.

There are many things to do in the town and several Landmarks of interest including Rugby Cement Works, St Andrews Church, St Mary's Church and the statues of Rupert Brooke, Thomas Hughes and William Webb Ellis. Some popular tourist attractions include Rugby School Museum, The Rugby Football Museum, Brandon Marsh, Coombe Abbey and Coombe Country Park, Dunchurch, Oxford Canal and Ryton Organic Gardens.
