Overveiw of Salisbury
There have been settlements on the Salisbury plain area for nearly ten thousand years, and Salisbury is most famous for its close connection to Stone Henge on Salisbury plain. Stone henge is a fantastic example of Neolithic masonary, and it is built on an alignment with the sun for the summer and winter solstices and the spring and autumn equinox. The stones used to build Stone henge are Bluestones from Wales, which is an incredible feat considering all the blocks used had to be rolled over two hundred miles on tree trunks.
Salisbury plain is listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site and alot of the land has very rare flora and fauna, making it perfect for those wishing to get back to nature, with trails, guided tours and pathways. Stone Henge can be found 8 miles to the north west of Salisbury, on salisbury Plain, very close to the army training grounds and barracks.
The settlement of salisbury itself dates back to the doomsday book, it has an anciaent cathedral with the UKs highest spire, much admired by Prince Charles. Within its walls it has one of the most compleate libraries of ancient documents, and pocesses one of only 4 remaining copies of the Magna Carta. salisbury has 5 river around it and these are all tributaries to the River Avon. Salisbury's rise in promonece probably has a lot to do with its proximity to the water ways, as they provided the town with a water supply and natural defense.
Today Salisbury has a thriving tourist trade, and excellent shopping facilities.With its abundence of historical bulidings and different architectural types it is well worth a visit.
Salisbury is situated 27 miles north of Bournemouth airport, this journey normally takes about 45 miutes.
