Overview of Salisbury

The city of Salisbury is located West of Gatwick airport a distance of 96 miles that would take around 1 hour 48 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M3. The city is located in the south-east of the county of Wiltshire. It sits at the confluence of five rivers: the Nadder, Ebble, Wylye and Bourne are all tributaries to the River Avon.

There have been settlements on the Salisbury plain area for nearly ten thousand years, and Salisbury is most famous for its close connection to Stone Henge. Stone henge is a fantastic example of Neolithic masonry, and it is built on an alignment with the sun for the summer and winter solstices and the spring and autumn equinox. The stones used to build Stone henge are Bluestones from Wales, which is an incredible feat considering all the blocks used had to be rolled over two hundred miles on tree trunks.

Salisbury plain is listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site and alot of the land has very rare flora and fauna, making it perfect for those wishing to get back to nature, with trails, guided tours and pathways. Stone Henge can be found 8 miles to the north west of Salisbury, on Salisbury Plain, very close to the army training grounds and barracks.

Today Salisbury itself has a thriving tourist trade, and excellent shopping facilities.With its abundence of historical bulidings and different architectural types it is well worth a visit. Including it's ancient cathedral with the UKs highest spire, much admired by Prince Charles. Within its walls it has one of the most complete libraries of ancient documents, and possess one of only 4 remaining copies of the Magna Carta.
