Overview of Stamford
The town of Stamford is located North of Gatwick airport a distance of 136 miles that would take around 2 hours 18 minutes by taxi via the M25, M11 and A1. It is situated on the River Welland, in the county of Lincolnshire.
Stamford was the first conservation area to be designated in England and Wales under the Civic Amenities Act 1967. Since then the whole of the old town and St Martin's has been made an outstanding area of architectural or historic interest that is of national importance. Therefore there is much interest in its vibrant local history. The town is best known for its medieval core of 17th 18th century stone buildings, older timber framed buildings and five medieval parish churches.
Barn Hill is a well-preserved and picturesque cobbled stoned street nestled behind All Saints' Church, in the town square. This setting provided key locations for the BBC TV series Middlemarch and the Merchant Ivory movie (2000). All Saints Brewery is also located off the main square, where as well as a coffee lounge and restaurant you can enjoy tours and tastings. Burghley House is located just south of Stamford and is regarded by many as the finest Elizabethan House in England. The stunning house, extensive grounds and sculpture park are open to the public over the summer period. Burghley House also plays host to the Burghley Horse Trials in the Autumn which is the longest, continuous running international horse event.
