Overview of Stevenage

The town of Stevenage is located North of Gatwick airport a distance of 78 miles that would take around 1 hour 25 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A1. It is situated in Hertfordshire and has a population of 84,651 according to 2007 statistics. The towns name means 'place at the strong oak'.

When the new town was built it revealed Romano-British remains such as silver coins and burial sites from that era. The first Saxon camp was made in a clearing in the woods to the East of the roman sites and this is where the church, manor house and first village were built. The remains of a medieval homestead was also found in Whomerley Wood which is thought to have been the home of Ralph de Homle. The towns prosperity largely came from North Road where many inns in the high street served the Stagecoaches, 21 passed through the town each day in 1800. In 1857 the Great Northern Railway was constructed and after the second world war it as established as a New Town.

There are many places of interest in Stevenage such as Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage Leisure Park which has Cinema, clubs and restaurants and shopping at Queensway and the Westgate. There are some lovely places to walk such as Fairlands Valley and Monks & Whomerley Wood.
