Overview of Stroud
Stroud is a Market town that provides a commercial center for many small local villages. It is situated in the middle of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is know as the meeting way of the 5 valleys, and as such has a excellent supply of water from its 5 rivers. This lead to rapid growth and expansion in the Industrial Revolution, and brought much properity to the region. The rivers were used to power the new mills being built and Stroud became famus as an ecporter of cloth. Today only 2 of the previously 150 mills survive. Green cloth for snooker tables is produced here.
Stroud has a long history of protesting and has a massive green community. It was the first place in the UK to have a Green Party controlled Council and was one of the birth places of the organis food movement. This can be seen in the number of small independant shops and cafes in the area. In recent years, residents have united to save trees, old buildings, hospitals and the post office in the local area. All these campaigns have been sucessful!
