Overview of Sunbury-on-Thames

The town of Sunbury-on-Thames is located North West of Gatwick airport a distance of 78 miles that would take around 1 hour 25 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M3. It is located in the county of Surrey, on the northbank of the River Thames and forms part of the London Commuter Belt.

The earliest evidence of occupation in Sunbury is provided by the discovery of Bronze Age funerary urns dating from the 10th century BC. The Three Fishes in Green Street is one of the oldest pubs in Surrey, thought to date back to the 16th century. The town's riverside Church of St Mary's and the Ferry House nearby are mentioned in the book Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. Other literary references include the difficulty of rowing up Sunbury backwater in "Three Men in a Boat" by Jerome K. Jerome.

The town has been the home to London Irish Rugby Club since 1932 although since 2001 its senior side play home matches at Madejski Stadium in Reading, the club still has its headquarters and training facilities in Sunbury, and its youth and senior academy teams play at Sunbury. Kempton Park Racecourse is also located on the edge of town it hosts both National Hunt racing and Flat racing, with its most famous race being the King George VI Chase held every Boxing Day.
