Overview of Swindon

Swindon is famous as a meeting of the ways, and has many roundabouts, including the famous "Magic Roundabout", which joins together 5 roads. Swindon has a junction with the M4, which connects it to London in the East and Bristol in the west. To the north and south, the A419 and A346 connect Swindon to Gloucester and Salisbury.

In 1840, Isambard Kingdom Brunel chose Swindon as the site for the railway works he planned for the Great Western Railway. This lead to great prosperity in the region during the Industrial Revolution. Due to the influx of railway workers, a systerm of health care was set up. Workers had money taken from thier wages each week, in exchange for free health care. This laid the blue print for the NHS.

Today the transport industry plays an important role in the town. Other industrial employers include; Pharmacieuticals, insurance and financial management. Like Slough to the West, Swindon acts as a conference and meeting center for major businesses in the UK, and as such has excellent connections to all major commercial hubs.
