Overview of Thetford

The town of Thetford is located North East of Gatwick airport a distance of 119 miles that would take around 2 hours 5 minutes by taxi via the M25, M11 and A11. Thetford is a markt town in the county of Norfolk. The 2001 census shows it had a population of 21,588.

In the Anglo-Saxon period, Thetford was the home of the monarchs of East Anglia. The Domesday Book lists William of Bello Fargo as the Bishop of Thetford in 1085. Castle Hill, to the south-east of the town centre, is the highest Norman motte in England though no trace remains of the castle which once surmounted it. The mound (motte) is open to the public, and provides excellent views of the town from its summit. Thetford also contains the ruins of a 12th century Cluniac priory. The Priory, open to the public, was closed during the Reformation. The external scenes for the BBC1 TV series Dad's Army were filmed in and around the town with Thetford's flint buildings doubling for Walmington-on-Sea. In December 2007 a statue of Arthur Lowe who played the leading character Captain George Mainwaring would be erected in the town next to the Little Ouse river in the town.

If visiting the town you can experience some of the nostalgia from it's Dad's Army days by visiting the Dad's Army Museum, with lots of interesting exhibits and a lovely tearoom on site. Ancient House Museum is located in the centre of town and is housed in a magnificent timber framed Tudor merchants house built in about 1490, it contains displays on much of the towns history, flint, archaeology and natural history. For the more adventerous Go Ape at Thetford provides the chance to scramble into the treetops and swing from tree to tree!
