Overview of Tilbury

The town of Tilbury is located North East of Gatwick airport a distance of 45 miles that would take around 49 minutes by taxi via the M25. Tilbury is situated on the River Thames, in the county of Essex. Due to its location the Port of Tilbury is the principle port for London.

Tilbury s history is closely connected with its geographical location, the Port of Tilbury lies on the north shore of the River Thames, 25 miles (40 km) below London Bridge, where the rivers meander has caused it to narrow. In 1852 an Act of Parliament had authorised the building of the London Tilbury and Southend Railway (LTSR), with a short spur to take advantage of the ferry over the Thames to Gravesend; a pier nearby was constructed for the steamboat traffic. The station was originally named Tilbury Fort and opened in 1854. The station was renamed Tilbury Riverside in 1936. A few houses were built for the railway workers, but it was not until the construction of Tilbury Docks in 1886 that there was any settlement worthy of a name. Today, The Port of Tilbury handles a variety of bulk cargo, timber, cars and container traffic and remains, along with Southampton and Felixstowe, one of Britain's three major container ports. It is the main UK port for importing paper, including newsprint.

Tilbury Fort is today, a popular tourist attraction, built in 1539 by Henry III, Tilbury was deemed a suitable place to construct forts for the defence of London against foreign invaders. The site is also famous as the location of Queen Elizabeth's speech during the Armada invasion. Slightly further along the shoreline is Coalhouse Fort, also open to the public.
