Overview of Tiverton
The town of Tiverton is located South West of Gatwick airport a distance of 180 miles that would take around 3 hour 13 minutes by taxi via the M25, M3 and M5. Tiverton is in the county of Devon and has a population of 18,621 according to the 2001 Census.
The town's name is derived from 'Twy-ford-ton' or 'Twyverton', meaning 'the town on two fords', as the town stands at the confluence of the rivers Exe and Lowman. Human occupation in the area dates back to the Stone Age, with many flint tools found in the area. It was also the site chosen by Henry I for a Norman castle, Tiverton Castle first built in 1106 as a Motte and Bailey type and extensively remodelled in the 13th and 14th Centuries. Tiverton owes its early growth and prosperity to the wool trade which caused the town to grow rapidly in the 16th and 17th Centuries. Around 1600 there were two major fires in the town, the first in 1596, allegedly started in a frying pan, destroyed most of the town. The second, in 1612, was known as the "dog fight fire" because a dog fight had distracted people who were supposed to be looking after a furnace. The Grand Western Canal from Taunton to Tiverton opened in 1838. In more recent years Tiverton has experienced large amounts of redevelopment, including the provision of a large numbers of new homes, this is due to Tiverton's revived commuter links to Exeter and Taunton.
Tiverton has one of the few remaining Horse drawn barges in England. It makes for a very relaxing and comfortable ride and is a great way to see a large section of the Grand Western Canal. Knightshayes Court provides a beautiful setting for a stroll, with a formal garden, parkland and kitchen garden to view aswell as the stunning House itself, all looked after by the National Trust. Other places of interest include, Tiverton Castle, Devon Railway Centre and Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life.
