The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is located East of Heathrow airport a distance of 24 miles that would take around 45 minutes by taxi via the M4 and A4. It is located to the east of the City of London and north of the River Thames it has a population of 256,000 according to 2011 statistics.
The borough is located in the East End of London and was formed in 1965 with the merging of Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney. The history of the area can be traced back to the Roman times when they built the road between London and Colchester and evidence has suggested that farming was undertaken at Old Ford which would have supplied fresh food to the city of Londinium. During 1078 William the Conquerer was laying the foundations of the Tower of London and had built the White Tower as a watchtower over the city and the small settlements around the tower enabled the soldiers to man the fortress. It developed in the 19th century and industries related to construction, repair, and victualling of ships flourished in the area from Tudor times.
The area today is characterised by a bustling mulitcultural community with a mixture of modern aswell as ancient attractions to explore. Some of the most popular attractions include The Tower of London, Brick Lane market, Roman Road Market, Columbia Road Flower Market, Petticoat Lane Market and Spitalfields Market.
