Overview of Uckfield

The town of Uckfield is located South East of Gatwick airport a distance of 25 miles that would take around 42 minutes by taxi via the M23 and B2028. It is situated on the southern edge of the Weald and on the River Uck. Uckfield is in the county of East Sussex.

Uckfield developed as a stopping-off point on the pilgrimage route between Canterbury, Chichester and Lewes. The settlement began to develop around the bridging point of the river, including the locally-famous Pudding Cake Lane where travellers visited a public house for slices of pudding cake; and the 15th-century Bridge Cottage, the oldest house still standing in Uckfield, now a museum. Church Street contains a number of post-medieval buildings. These include the Old Grammar School, Bakers Cottage and the Malt House with Malt Cottage (all built before 1700). Today Uckfield is still a major crossing point of the River Uck, though by road.

Within the towns boundaries is Sheffield Park and Gardens, run by the National Trust. It s a beautiful place to watch the seasons change, with large ponds, lakes and the ever changing scenery that nature provides, it also homes a tea shop and refreshment area. Sheffield Park Train Station is the main base of Bluebell Railway providing nostalgic Steam train journey's to and from East Grinstead. Tinkers Park also provides a hint of nostalgia with its exhibits of old double decker buses, traction engines, mechanical musical fair organs and mighty steam engines.
