Overview of Wakefield

Wakefield is a town in West Yorkshire and is 23 miles from Leeds Bradford Airport, the journey normally takes about 40 minutes in normal traffic conditions. Wakefield has a population of 315172 according to the 2001 census. Situated by the River Calder the history of the town goes as far back as the Roman Times. The Cathedral in the centre of the town has a spire 75 meters tall and is the largest in Yorkshire.

Town attractions include The National Coal Mine Museum and The Yorkshire Sculpture Park. There is alot to do in the town with a free bus service and many shops to browse in with a large shopping centre called the Ridings, Wakefield Market along with many others in the area. For sports and Leisure in nearby Castleford is Xscape, a centre with a real snow indoor ski slope, Ice climbing wall, cinema and many other facilities. There is Horse Racing at Pontefract, Pugneys Country Park for sailing and a number of Nature trails and parks for walking enthusiasts. For nights out there are many themed Restaurants and bars to choose from, The Theatre Royal is a good choice for shows and performances and there many nightclubs and pubs.

There are many places surrounding the town worth visiting, near Ossett is the Nostell Priory and Marsden Moor Estate. St Mary's Chantry Chapel in Kirkgate, Normanton with Hardwick Hall, Newstead Abbey, Hucknall Church of St. Mary Magdalene being all local attractions.
