Exeter airport is 53 miles west of Weymouth and can be accessed via the B3157, A35, and the A30. This journey in normal traffic conditions should take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. If you are travelling to the airport please leave a longer amount of time in case you encounter any traffic congestion.

An overview of Weymouth

Weymouth is a large town in Dorset. It is situated on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the river Wey. It is 8 miles south of Dorchester and 5 miles north of the isle of Portland. The A354 Bridge connects Weymouth to Portland and they are joined together as a borough.

According to the census taken in 2001 Weymouth has a population of 51,880. Weymouth is a major tourist resort and its economy depends highly on the harbour and visitor attractions.

Sited on the Dorset and east Devon coast Weymouth is important for its geology and landforms. It is also to cross channel ferries, pleasure boast and private yachts. The sailing events of the 2012 Olympics will be taking place in the nearby Portland harbour.

History

1252 Weymouth was established as a seaport and became a chartered borough. Melcombe Regis developed separately on the peninsula to the north of the harbour. It was at this port where it is believed that the Black Death first came across to England in June 1348. In their early history Weymouth and Melcombe Regis were trading rivals until the two towns were united by parliament in 1571. This is when they became a double borough.

King Henry VIII had two device forts built to protect the south Dorset coast from invasion in 1530 s. The two forts are called Sandfoot castle this is in Wyke Regis and Portland Castle in Castletown. Parts of Sandfoot castle have no fallen into the sea due to coastal erosion.

Weymouth s esplanade is composed of Georgian Terraces which have now been converted into a mixture of apartments, hotels and guest houses. The buildings were constructed from 1770-1855 and were designed by the famous architect James Hamilton.

Weymouth and Portland were bombed by German Aircraft during World War 2. Portland harbour had a large Naval Base and Weymouth was home to the Nothe fort. You can find the well documented history in the Timewalk museum in Brewers Quay.
