Overview of Wigan
Wigan is a large town in greater Manchester. Wigan is located 27.2 miles north east of Liverpool Airport . This journey should take about 40 minutes by taxi in normal traffic conditions.You can travel from Liverpool airport to Wigan via two motorways, the M62 then the M6 followed by the A49 to the centre. Wigan is situated about halfway between Manchester and Liverpool and stands on the river Douglas. Wigan is 15 miles south of Preston, 16.5 miles northwest of Manchester, and 17.4 miles east-northeast of Liverpool.
Wigan has a population of 81.203 residents according to the census taken in 2001. The town has many fantastic facilities, some of which include clubs, pubs, restaurants and shopping facilities.
Wigan saw a vast expansion in its population during the industrial revolution. It was once a large manufacturer of porcelain and clocks but is now recognised as a major mill town and coal mining district.
Wigan has two main Sports clubs the Wigan Athletic football club and the Wigan Warriors the rugby league. Both clubs share the JJB stadium which was built by Alfred McAlpine and opened by Sir Alex Ferguson in August 1999.The stadium has a seating capacity of 25135 seats and has 15 luxury suites.
Wigan is home to two main colleges of Further Education including Winstanley College and Wigan and Leigh College which offers a wide range of courses in vocational and academic subjects.
