Overview of Wrexham

The town of Wrexham is located North West of Gatwick airport a distance of 226 miles that would take around 3 hours 55 minutes by taxi via the M25, M40 and M54. It is situated between the Welsh mountains and the lower Dee Valley close to the border with Cheshire, England. As the largest town in the north of Wales, it is a major centre of the region's commercial, retail and educational infrastructure.

The Romans invaded North Wales in AD49. With legionaries establishing a workshop producing tiles and pottery at Holt, a small village now incorporated in Wrexham's spread. The Discovery of the Civilian settlement at Plas Coch suggests Wrexham s origins lie in that Roman period. Wrexham prospered as a town during the 14th century. The town s market day was on Thursdays with the woollen and leather industries seemingly booming. Industrial innovations of the 18th and 19th centuries hailed the advent of ironmaking at Bersham Iron Foundry followed by an iron smelting works at Brymbo. Steel works, coal mining, lead mining and the limestone quarries and brick works all flourished due to the mineral wealth of the area. Many of these products were exported by canal over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, built in 1805 by Thomas Telford, a masterpiece of engineering and today a World Heritage Site.

In the last few years Wrexham has been transformed into a shoppers paradise whilst still retaining the charm of the older streets, arcades and markets - The Monday market is the largest in North Wales. Though there are plenty of visitor attractions and places of historical interest also, such as the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Valley Crucis Abbey (a thirteenth century abbey) and Erddig Hall (now a Nation Trust property).
