Overview of York

The town of York is located North of Gatwick airport a distance of 246 miles that would take around 4 hours 13 minutes by taxi via the M25, M1 and A1. It is situated in North Yorkshire and has a population of 198,000 according to 2011 Statistics.

The history of the settlement dates back to when Mesolithic people inhabited the area in around 7000 BC. When the Romans came to the area they built a Roman Fortress where York Minster stands today. In 866 the Vikings raided and captured York, and Eric Bloodaxe was the last ruler before he was driven out by King Edred on his campaign to Unify England. During the Middle Ages York became a major cloth manufacturing and trading centre and Edward I boosted the economy by using the city as a base for his war in Scotland. In 1839 the Railway came to York and the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway were based there. The railways helped in the expansion of Rowntree's Cocoa Works and by the 1900 the railways and confectionery had become the two major industries of the city.
